Individual membership

All women working in the Fire Service, Firefighters, Control staff, Fire Safety staff, Officers, Managers and Corporate/Administrative Support Staff. Men are welcomed to join as affiliate members, as long as they support the aims and objectives of the Network.

It has been recognised that without the support of many forward thinking and open minded men, the Network would have taken much longer to establish. Employers also have a part to play and may also join and support the Network as corporate members, thus supporting and encouraging their women employees.

Benefits of membership

Networking

The NWFS can be simply explained as a contact system, introduced to provide support for individuals who may feel isolated or be experiencing difficulties. By the simple use of communications, the NWFS aims to support women throughout the country.

Newsletters

The NWFS, through voluntary contributions, produces, prints and distributes a quarterly newsletter written by its own membership.

Conferences

The NWFS, in partnership with various Fire Service organisations, runs yearly conferences, specifically aimed at women who work in the fire service environment. They are held over three days, covering issues that will support, guide and educate attendees. This event gives women the opportunity to train together and share their knowledge and experiences. Such events also serve to forge links between individuals by meeting and networking with others.

Seminars

NWFS, in partnership with various fire service organisations, runs regular seminars to support and educate all sectors of fire service personnel, with the broad aim of promoting networking and equality at work.

Regional Events

The country is divided into regions, each region having a Regional Rep. The regions are then split into brigades with a Brigade/Service Rep being its point of contact. To encourage the overriding aim of the NWFS in providing support via networking to individuals, regional and brigade level events are organised.

Mentoring

NWFS run regular mentoring training courses so individuals can train to become a mentor or NWFS can provide trained mentors to assist individuals within their own services.

Training

We can provide regular training sessions to members on a variety of subjects related to individuals roles within the service or to help improve work life balance.

Information/Research

NWFS aims to be a source of information and point of reference on women’s issues for Fire and Rescue Services nationally. It carries out research into employment practices and membership experiences. This information is then made available to those who are interested, thus helping to break down barriers and promote equality.

Presentations

The NWFS delivers talks on a range of Equality and Diversity in the Fire Service subjects. We work closely with organisations to meet their identified needs.

Corporate Membership

Corporate members receive discounts off events fees, regular newsletters, promotional material, best practice handbooks, and advice on policies and procedures.

We will attend recruitment open days, help with mediation if you do have any problems, give one to one advice to the service, or provide formal mentoring. Basically we will help with the recruitment, retention and promotion of women working within all the roles within your service.
